Angel City dominated play against Silverlake Tuesday night at John Ferraro, taking a 3-2 win against the physically tough side to bring the squad's season total up to 11 wins.
The game score, like the two team's last encounter, was not indicative of the run play by any means. ACFC beat Silverlake 4-1 earlier this season, but that game could easily have been a tie.
Last night ACFC dominated every aspect of the game, racking up 11 clears shots on goal and 12 corner kicks on the night. Silverlake managed just two shots and a single corner, but slipped both their efforts into goal.
The first 15 minutes saw a calm ACFC side keeping possession and a goal off a header from Marius Sandvik called back off a very questionable call from the referee. But just as end-to-end play started to even out a bit, Dan Sapienza converted one of his many individual runs on the night, taking the ball past several defenders and the Silverlake goalie at the 18-minute mark.
Silverlake converted its lone first half shot on goal at the 32-minute mark off a low shot just inside the box. But the remainder of the half saw Angel City generating numerous near misses on the Silverlake goal. At one point it seemed like the posts were acting like a fifth Silverlake defender.
Marius Sandvik finally converted one of those chances in the second half (57 min) with a shot from inside the box after a prolonged scramble for the ball. Unfortunately, Silverlake struck back four minutes later off a lofting cross from the right side of the field which looped over keeper Dave Styles and into the net.
ACFC kept pressing for another goal, with Silverlake seemingly settling for a tie at that point. Ben O'Meara -- who earned his first match MVP award on the night -- took a pass from Brandon Cole and put it past the keeper for the win at the 80 minute mark. Strong defence and a tough midfield kept the result until the final whistle.
ACFC's record now sits at 11 wins and a tie for 34 points with only two games left in the season. Regular season matches left include: Blue Eagles, April 7 (Griffith Park); and Zig Zag Jaro, April 14 (John Ferraro). The top four teams make the playoffs with semi-finals set for Griffith Park on April 21.
ACFC currently sits in first place in the division tables. A tie against the Blue Eagles next week will seal that top spot, which will see the men in blue face off against the fourth place team in Semis.
