Ben Kull steps down as ACFC Manager

ACFC would like to extend its thanks to Ben Kull for all the time and hard work he put into the founding and managing the LA-based soccer club. After two years of tireless efforts, Kull has decided to put more time into his on-field ACFC successes as a mainstay on both the over-30 11s side and in 7 v 7 league and tourney action.

Kull rebranded the Shockers in 2008 into what is now Angel City FC and saw the club's trio of squads rack up a bunch of accolades during his two year tenure with coach Billy Alarcon, including an LA Municipal League and Cup Championship, two Santa Monica Adult 7 v 7 league cups and an ACSL division championship.

Kull was also instrumental in the formation of the Angel City Soccer League, which filled in the playing gaps when other adult leagues were on break. The second season is currently in progress after a highly successful inaugural winter session.

The club now supports a roster of about 50 players and looks forward to continuing on with Alarcon assuming the dual role of manager and coach, with the help of ACFC board members Kirby Adams, David Woirhaye, Pete Wasek, Rahoul Ghose and Kull.

Kull's managerial skills will be sorely missed. He will continue to look after the 7s squads competing in the Santa Monica League and the ACSL.

ACFC over-30s 11s squad recruiting

Angel City FC is on the look-out for new soccer talents -- goalies, defenders, midfielders and strikers -- for the over-30s 11s squad which competes in the LA Municipal League.

If you are interested in trying out for a great local club, please fill out the Player Information Form to arrange a spot at the next convenient practice through Manager/Coach Billy Alarcon.

Prior competitive experience and a respectable level of fitness are required. League play resumes in July.

News about upcoming 11s specific practices, scrimmages and the league will be released shortly by Alarcon, the newly named Club Manager, who steps into the role following a successful first few years under the tutelage of Ben Kull, who conceived and built the club from the ground up. Kull will thankfully be staying with ACFC as an 11s player likely in a holding midfielder role.

ACFC 7s take pair of wins

Game recap: Peter Marlenga

The first game we went down 0-3 right away, then scored a spirited 4 in a row to be up at half. The second half was an obvious defensive battle as no goals were scored by either team. Everyone on Angel City hustled their asses off, and with a few good saves thrown in there, we pulled out a close one.

The second game saw the team struggle with a few defensive let downs and also missed offensive opportunities abound. Overall it was a rough game.

The third game was a good time seeing lots of different players score and putting Angel City above .500 for the day. Volkert and Manos capitalized on a few opportunities but left many on the table as well.

Overall we were 2-1 on the day. Ben Kull coached well and also got in some playing time too!
