Angel City ended the spring Santa Monica Adult League 7s season on a high winning the Sevilla division title and taking two second place finishes in the Setanta and Santiago divisions.
The three squads -- coached by Billy Alarcon and managed by Ben Kull -- each posted a high-scoring win on the final day of season play.
But it was the AC Allstars which made no mistake in taking the club's first silverware ever. One point behind the Slutty Buffalos in the standings prior to their final season matchup, the Allstars dropped an early goal and then turned up the heat to score eight goals with confident passing and sharp finishes. Ben O'Meara and Jonny Ibanez each netted a hat trick with Tiit Tikenberg adding a single and several assists on the day. The 8-2 win capped a season of eight wins and two losses for the Allstars for 24 points, two above the Slutty Buffalos and That's What She Said. The squad racked up an amazing 62 goals with only 20 against (GD: +42) and two shutouts. Congrats to the Allstars team, which included: David Alarcon, Volkert Besseling, Brad Colwell, Santiago Gomez-Ribeiro, Jonny Ibanez, Ricardo LeDoux, Michael Magid, Russ Muratov, Ben O'Meara, Blake Nickle, Matt Onheiber, Pete Wasek, and several subs from other Angel City squads over the season.
Angel City FC posted an equally impressive win against Esbjerg FC in the second match -- 9-1 -- but needed a loss or a tie from the BH Allstars to take the Setanta division title. The season ended with Angel City, Matador FC and the BH Allstars tied in points with eight wins and two losses for 24 points. But under league rules ties are broken in head-to-head results and then head-to-head goal differential. Angel City posted a 5-3 win against the BHers last week but lost 8-1 earlier in the season to them, giving them a head-to-head 11-6 GD and the title. Overall the team netted 71 goals and let in 35 (GD: +36).
In the game Mike Gemballa netted a hat-trick while Jaime Chavez, David Siraj and Tiit Tikenberg each earned a brace. Dave Styles made several key saves to keep Esbjerg FC to a single goal.
Angel City FC included: Justin 'Kirby' Adams, David Alarcon, Tom Bry, Mike Lewis, Matthew McCallum, Bryan Moore, Ivan O'Neil, Marius Sandvik, Dan Sapienza, David Siraj, Dave Styles, Tiit Tikenberg, Leo Wallach, and several subs from other Angel City squads over the season.
In the final match ACFC -- who statistically could not win the Santiago title after suffering a third loss last week -- played like they were after more than second place, crushing a strong Valhalla side 7-2 to close out the season. Mike Sharp and Jaime Chavez each took a brace while Sergei Baranov, Blake Nickle and Mike Gemballa added singles. The game also saw the return of Ben Kull to action after a season of injury. ACFC finished with seven wins and three losses, three points behind the Swamp Donkeys. However the team posted the best overall GD in the division with 57 goals for and 25 against (+32).
ACFC included: Sergei Baranov, Jaime Chavez, Dylan Drew, Mike Gemballa, Rahoul Ghose, Michele Greco, Dan Klein,Peter Marlenga, Craig Nichols, Michael Sharp, Dan Stafford, David Woirhaye, and several subs from other Angel City squads over the season.
Summer 7s league play starts up again in June. Thanks to all the Angel City fans for their support throughout the spring season.
