Angel City FC quickly overcame some early match jitters to dominate an aggressive Dinamo Lokomotiv side 5-0 Tuesday night at Griffith Park taking the team to 3-0 for the season with a goal average of +16.
ACFC midfielder David 'Puma' Alarcon -- voted the match's team MVP -- kicked off the scoring with a strike at the seven-minute mark and added a second off an impressive header from a David Woirhaye corner kick 11 minutes later.
The team had been practicing set plays the night before during training.
Ben O'Meara rung the tally up to three less than two minutes later, knocking Dinamo completely off it game plan for the remainder of the game. And Dan Sapienza rounded out the first half scoring with a shot from outside the box at the 36-minute mark. The team's scoring prowess was backed up by solid checking in the midfield and a study defense, which held Dinamo to only two actual shots on goal over the full 90 minutes.
The second half saw more scoring opportunities, with ACFC playing a counterattack game. O'Meara notched his second goal on the night towards the end of the second half following a great run up the field and pass from defender Dan Klein.
Keeper Dave Styles recorded his second successive shutout on the night and sports an impressive .333 goals against average over three games.
Angel City next sees action Feb. 3 against the Silverlagos at John Ferraro with an early 6:30 PM kickoff.

ACFC notches second lopsided win
Angel City FC took quick advantage of its full roster Tuesday night at John Ferraro Soccer Park, thumping an under-manned Sentinels squad 7-0 to earn the team's second successive win of the season.
The 11s squad went up 3-0 within six minutes of the opening whistle off goals from Dan Sapienza, Pete Wasek and Tom Bry, who all capitalized on poor defence and the Sentinel's lack of a proper keeper.
At the 15 minute mark, the Sentinels finally fielded a full squad and keeper and the game seemed to settle down a bit. But ACFCs continued attacks earned two more goals before the half, courtesy of striker Russ Muratov. Strong defence and a hungry midfield kept keeper Dave Styles fairly relaxed for the half.
"Our opponent was not the highest quality, but we also did not sink to their level," said team manager Ben Kull. "We played good, selfless, attacking soccer."
The second half saw a multitude of chances for ACFC, which also contained the Sentinel attack to only a couple of scoring opportunities. Matt Onheiber finally cracked the Sentinal goal again at the 55-minute mark, with a hard shot which almost took the keeper in as well. Muratov rounded out his hat-trick at the 65-minute mark off another counterattacking run up the field. Brandon Cole, Dan Sapienza, Dan Stafford, and David Woirhaye racked up assists on the night.
ACFC now faces a heavier challenge next Tuesday night at Griffith Park, with an 8:45 kickoff against Dinamo Lokomotiv. The squad is currently tied for first place in Division C with the Blue Eagles, who also have two wins and a goal average of +11. (Full standings)

ACFC starts season with a convincing win
Angel City FC kicked off the 2009 LA Municipal Soccer League 11s season on a high note, taking down FC Perya 5-1 at the John Ferraro Soccer fields Tuesday night.
The squad dominated the first half against the older and slower Perya side, but failed to capitalize on several chances in front of goal. Perya seemed content to defend and kick long balls up the field in the hopes of creating a lucky chance. But the ACFC defence kept them at bay under sweeper Kirby Adams.
In the second half ACFC came alive scoring five consecutive goals. Brandon Cole notched a pair, Russ Muratov knocked in two and added an assist, and David Woirhaye took a goal and an assist. Matt Onheiber and Ben O'Meara each collected an assist.
The half saw better passing and a calmer style of play from ACFC, who held on to the shutout until the very last play of the game, when an errant pass in the backfield ended up on an opponents foot. For most of the second half Perya simply ran out of steam.
ACFC play the Sentinels next Tuesday, Jan. 20 at John Ferraro, with an early 6:30 PM kickoff.

Angel City gearing up for season opener
Angel City took a hard-fought 1-1 draw against divisional rivals Silverlagos in a pre-season friendly Tuesday night at the Griffith Park Turf field.
ACFC dominated the first half with a tight checking game, plenty of chances and a lone goal by Sheldon Mitchell. The second half saw more chances on goal, but the team failed to capitalize. The Silverlagos netted their tying goal late in the second half when a shot from outside the box hit a post and landed in front of two unmarked forwards who tapped the ball past keeper Ben Kull. Overall the team had a strong defensive effort and great goalkeeping by Kull. The midfield managed to shutdown the Silverlagos passing game for much of the match. But with the season fast approaching, the team now looks to finishing off its chances in the goal mouth.
ACFC's first game of the 2009 30+ season will be Tuesday, January 13 at John Ferraro Soccer Park (field #6) against C-Division champs FC Perya. Kickoff is 8:25 PM.
"This will be one of our hardest games of the year and it's very important to take points off them," said ACFC Manager Ben Kull. "We've worked hard this off season. We're playing very well. And I expect us to win."
This will be Angel City's first match against FC Perya as the squad was in a different division last season.
ACFC have an inter-team friendly Saturday (10 AM) at Playa Vista and a skills training practice Monday night at the Santa Monica Airport starting at 8:30 PM.

New Shin Guard technology appeals to the swift
Rahoul Ghose
ACFC Web Producer
While boot technology has yielded some interesting innovations over the past few years – Nike’s ultralight Vapor chassis and upper, adidas’ build it yourself Tunit system of uppers, soles and studs, and Lotto’s pivoting stud technology – shin guard design has for the most part stayed the same.
In the past year however, both nike and adidas have come up with a few new varieties worthy of note.
Adidas took a page from its compression wear line in creating the ForMotion F50 shin guard, an extremely lightweight offering, featuring a compression sleeve and protective air-filled front shield. For players whose main complaint with shin guards is loss of speed – mostly strikers – this guard simply feels like an extra sock. And for mild collisions it offers more than enough protection. Having worn them as a defender, though, I can definitely say they do not hold up under heavy tackles, and I have the bumps and bruises to show for it.
This may be why adidas introduced a newer version recently, featuring both removable ankle supports and a thicker – though still flexible and comfortable – front shield. Both versions support your muscles and encourage blood flow for reduced muscle fatigue. And the ClimaCool® material offers the user both heat and moisture control. Those lucky enough to locate the original F50s will find them heavily discounted (under $20) while the newer version retails for about $40. Both are washable and dry quickly when laid out. (Do not put them in the dryer).
Nike, on the other hand, has adapted some snowboard boot technology with its Total 90 EXP Shinguard. While expensive at $50, this top of the line product features custom moldable guards and a padded inner shield for the shin and the calf, as well as washable sleeves and ankle guards. Guards are boiled in water until they soften. Then they are placed in the sleeves to conform to the shape of your shin while they cool. This is similar to the inners for snowboard boots, which are warmed in a microwave oven so they will conform to the users’ foot. The shin guard molding process, which only has to be performed before first use, definitely makes the wear more comfortable. The entire guard setup is lightweight and breathable.
While both the adidas and nike options are a little more expensive than the average shin guard fare, they both feature excellent construction. With care they will last one and possibly two seasons of wear. All of them can be found on soccer.com.
