ACFC knocks off Cloverfield FC 3-2

The Angel City FC over-30s squad closed its first half-season in the LAPL with a 3-2 win over mid-tablers Cloverfield FC Thursday night.

ACFC dropped an early goal but tied the match 1-1 just before halftime off a well struck free kick from Ben O'Meara just outside the box.

Matt Onheiber doubled the lead at the 67-minute mark off a pass from Brandon Cole with a blazing, low shot into the left corner of the goal. And Cole added a third himself, knocking in a cross from Marius Sandvik in the 81st minute.

That third goal was instrumental in the win as Cloverfield notched a second minutes from time. But ACFC held on for the win. O'Meara was named MVP of the match, while keeper Pete Marlenga made several fine stops throughout to keep the game close.

ACFC posted a 3-3-3 record in the nine games it played, but finished 10th out of 12 teams as the squad inherited the bottom-table record from the team it replaced midway through the 22-game season.

ACFC now plays in the LAPL Cup round Thursday, August 5 against a yet-to-be-determined opponent at Crossroads with an 8 PM start.
