Angel City squads both qualify for ACSL playoffs

A pair of wins today in ACSL action at Playa Vista ensured both host squads a place in the four-team Cup round in December, with a match still to play.

The AC Allstars knocked off Esjberg 6-1 to solidify 2nd place in the EPL on 10 points, three points behind Malibu United, who took a 3-0 decision due to a Real Talk default.  Neither Real Talk nor Esjberg FC can make up the points spread with only one week left in the regular season.

David Woirhaye recorded another hat trick during the match, which also saw strikes from Mathieu, Greg and Mark. Despite the four-week break, the squad played a calm passing game and took their chances well.

The Allstars will play EPL division leaders next (Dec. 11) for the title with the home side needing to win by more than three goals to hoist the division cup. Malibu took the first meeting 3-0. A win would put the teams tied on 13 points with head-to-head results being the first deciding factor.

In La Liga action, Angel City FC won a hard-fought 6-4 match against TWSS to move within three points of div leaders the Old Boys, who dropped a 4-0 loss to the Swamp Donkeys on the day.

Mike Gemballa and Michael Sharp each notched a brace while Kevin and Brandon Cole added singles.

The Donkeys sit three points behind Angel City with a game to go, but even if they tie on points, they have already lost the head-to-head match up by a combined 10-6. (2-5, 8-1).

Angel City and the Old Boys will also fight for a division title on the final week, with ACFC needing a win by two or more goals to topple the current top place squad. The Old Boys won the first round match 3-2.

Week 6 (of 6) play continues next month with games at 1 and 2 PM on Dec. 11.

Angel City take three wins

Angel City FC capped its second South Bay Sports League Season with a 10th straight win, knocking off Long Beach 4-2.  The playoffs schedule will be announced soon.  Congrats to the squad for a clean sweep during regular season play.

In Angel City Soccer 7 v 7 League play both ACFC and the AC Allstars improved their chances of a playoffs berth with a pair of impressive wins, Angel City 8-1 over the Swamp Donkeys and the Allstars 8-3 over Real Talk.  The wins improve both teams' hold on second place in their respective divisions with just two matches to go ... only the top two squads in each division advance to the Cup round.

David Woirhaye led the Sunday charge with four goals in each of the two matches, just one shy of the single day club record of nine.  Luis Deveze notched a hat trick, Brandon Cole a brace, and Mike Gemballa, Matt Onheiber and Mark singles on the day.

League play goes on hiatus for few weeks now, due to field availability issues, with teams returning to action Nov. 13.

Angel City FC's LA Premier League squad next sees action this coming Saturday against Real Santa Monica at West LA College, with a 12 PM start.

Angel City wrap up

Despite two losses in ACSL action this past Sunday, both the AC Allstars and Angel City FC remain in contention for playoff spots in the EPL and La Liga.

The Allstars dropped a 3-0 decision to Malibu United, slipping to second place by three points, but one point above Real Talk and two above Esjberg FC with three regular season games to go.  The top two teams in each division move on to the cup round.

Angel City FC, meanwhile, gave La Liga leaders -- the Old Boys -- a run for their money, narrowly losing 3-2 (goals by Mike Gemballa and Brandon Cole) after missing two breakaway opportunities.

While the Old Boys record moves to 3-0, Angel City is tied on points with That's What She Said and the Swamp Donkeys in second with a win and two losses, but they lead the lower pack by the slightest of goal differential margins.

Game 4 matches for both teams are next Sunday with 2 and 3 PM starts.

And in South Bay Sports League action, Angel City are now one win away from a perfect season, this week knocking off the Redondo Rangers 5-0.  The season finale will be against Long Beach on Oct. 16 with a 9:45 am start.  Playoffs will take place the following week with Angel City likely getting a bye through the first round.

Angel City enjoys weekend successes

Angel City enjoyed a variety of successes over play in three separate leagues this past weekend, racking up two wins and two hard-fought ties.

ACFC's LA Premier League squad kicked off the run with come-from-behind tie against reigning champs Valhalla 3-3 at Crossroads Saturday evening.  Down 2-0 early in the first half, ACFC slotted one goal in before the half and came out on top in the second half, doubling Valhalla's tally 2-1 for the tie.  The game was stopped before time due to a serious shoulder injury to Blake Nickle.  The team wishes him a speedy recovery.

In Angel City Soccer League 7s action, both home squads staged come backs, with Angel City FC overcoming 2-0 and 4-2 deficits to win 5-4 against a fast and young That's What She Said Squad ... the win moves the team into second place in the La Liga Division behind the daunting Old Boys, who Angel City meet next week.  Brandon Cole led the scoring with a well-earned hat-trick while a newly returned Kirby Adams and Mike Gemballa added singles.

In EPL action the AC Allstars maintained their unbeaten record with two last minute goals to tie Esjberg FC 3-3.  Matt Onheiber, Rahoul Ghose and Mathieu struck home for the Allstars, who sit tied for the EPL lead with Malibu United, who they meet next week.

And finally in South Bay Sports League play, Angel City maintained their winning streak of eight straight games with a 5-0 drubbing of second-place Del Rey City SC.  Only two games remain in the season with Angel City set to face the Redondo Rangers and Long Beach before the playoffs kick off. The win pretty much sealed Angel City's position as the league's points leader.

ACSL FALL 2011 SEASON moving forward

Due to a lack of field availability at the Playa Vista Sports Complex, the ACSL has reduced its team selection to eight squads this Fall. Teams will compete in two divisions of four -- EPL and La Liga -- from late September through mid-December, with the Cup round slotted for Dec. 18.

Matches will be played on Sundays.  League fees are again $625 per team.  Once registration is complete the schedule will be completed and announced. Confirmed teams to date include: Esbjerg FC, Real Talk, That's What She Said, Malibu FC, Angel City FC and the AC All-Stars.

Allstars take Santiago title with one game left

After revenging their only loss this season to MarVista Beckenbauer with a 5-2 win Saturday at the Santa Monica Airport fields, the AC Allstars captured the Santiago Division title with one game left to go.

MVB had beaten the Allstars by an identical scoreline earlier in the season, but had since dropped two draws to sit in second place.  Matt Onheiber led the squad with a hat trick, while Rahoul Ghose and Andres Rodriguez each added singles for the win.  The game sat at 2-2 at one point, but strong passing and cool heads on the field yielded a well-earned win.  The Allstars play the Foot Soldiers next week at 1:30 PM, hoping to finish the season at 9-0-1.

Angel City FC also saw success on the day, taking a hard-fought 5-2 win against mid-season replacements SAMO in Sevilla Division action.  Ian Worrel netted a brace, with Luis Deveze, Mike Gemballa and keeper Chris (set free from his posts) adding singles. The win improved the squad's record to three wins, a tie and five losses. Angel City play their final match next Saturday at 12:30 PM against Power of the Pack.

ACFC, at the time still in contention for the Setanta Division title, unfortunately started the day a little flat ... and without a proper keeper, losing 8-2 to Three-One-0. Brandon Cole earned the brace, but the loss leaves the squad in need of a hefty win against division leaders Del Rey next week at 11:30 AM to win second place.

ACFC bows out in semis

Angel City dropped two games to That's What She Said in ACSL Cup action Saturday at Playa Vista, forcing the club to settle for a consolation final win against Malibu United and third place overall.

The Allstars went down 4-2 in the quarterfinals to TWSS with James Green and Dave Wardell scoring in a game which could have gone either way. Then ACFC, who received a bye in the semis based on their EPL title standing, took on TWSS in an end-to-end, action-filled match which saw both teams holding onto the lead at times. With about a minute to go ACFC scored to make the game 4-3 -- and looked to have sealed a finals berth -- but the tenacious TWSS netted a tying goal with literally seconds on the clock. ACFC went down 2-1 in the PK round, with James Green netting the only PK goal. Green had two goals in regular time, as did Brad Miller.

While Typhoon FC went on to win the Tom Bry Cup, 4-3 over a tired TWSS, ACFC netted the consolation final honors with a 6-3 win over Malibu United.

ACSL action resumes in the Fall.

ACFC and Allstars Playoff-bound

Angel City finished the Spring ASCL regular season with a trio of wins and two berths in the Cup Round June 11.

ACFC ended its perfect season with a sixth straight win (4-1 vs the Swamp Donkeys) to top both the EPL Division, and the league as a whole, as the top seed going into playoffs. The squad earns a bye directly into the semis set for 10 AM next Saturday against the winner of a quarter-final match between That's What She Said and the AC Allstars at 9 AM.

After surviving a missed penalty kick, and then letting in an own goal off a corner kick, ACFC finally hit their stride, with striker James Green notching a hat trick and David Woirhaye adding a single tally for the win. The result knocked the Donkeys --- the defending champions from Spring Season -- out of the playoffs.

The AC Allstars -- who suffered a mixed season of results with three wins, a tie and two losses -- turned their game up a notch against cross-town rivals Del Rey City, who had been dropped into second last week after losing an 8-3 decision to Typhoon FC, this year's Serie A Division winners.

After a 2-2 tie earlier in the season, the Allstars were ready for a tough match against Del Rey, but the unexpected 12-4 final score gave the team second spot and a playoff berth based on both head-to-head results and goal differential. Matt Onheiber, Brandon Cole and James Green each scored hat tricks, followed by David Woirhaye with a brace, and Jonny Ibanez with a single.

In next week's playoffs, if the Allstars knock off TWSS in the quarterfinals, at least one of the semi-finals will be an all blue home team affair.

In La Liga action, which saw Malibu United top the division with a 4-0 win over TWSS, Angel City FC were playing simply for pride. The squad ended the season in third spot with 7-3 trashing of Esjberg FC. James Green and Stan Tran each notched a brace, with Volkert Besseling, Mo and Dan Stafford adding singles.

And finally, in the Angel City Golden Boot competition, James Green topped the field with an impressive collection of 25 goals, followed by David Woirhaye with 10 and Matt Onheiber with 9. (Full stats below)

ACFC claim EPL ACSL Division Title

With one week still left to play ACFC claimed the ACSL EPL division title -- and a first-round bye in the Cup tourney (June 11) -- producing a convincing 7-0 win over AWOL Select Saturday at Playa Vista.

Russ Muratov netted a hat-trick, while David Woirhaye and club scoring leader James Green netted a brace each. Green has 17 on the season followed by Woirhaye at 7 and Matt Onheiber at 6. Keeper Logan Redlin recorded the rare 7 v 7 shutout on the day ... one of only two earned this season by ACSL sides.

The win, ACFC's fifth straight, gives them a commanding nine-point lead over the second-place Swamp Donkeys and AWOL. ACFC meet the Donkeys next week in the season finale, with a win ensuring the squad top seeding in the playoffs. The game will also determine who will grab second in the EPL ... and the other playoff spot.

In Serie A play, the AC Allstars netted a 3-0 default win with Real Talk failing to bring enough players for the match. Typhoon FC knocked Del Rey City out of top spot -- and ensured themselves a playoff spot -- with an 8-3 win. Typhoon now has 12 points, followed by Del Rey with 10 and the Allstars with 7. Second place in Serie A will be decided in the final week with the Allstars facing Del Rey, who they tied 2-2 earlier this year. A win will see the Allstars go through, based on head-to-head results (the first decider).

In La Liga the news wasn't as positive, with Angel City FC losing 7-2 to That's What She Said. The result gave TWSS a guaranteed playoff spot and knocked Angel City even further into third. Malibu United -- with their 10-1 win over Esjberg FC -- strengthened their hold on second, one point behind TWSS.

Angel City face Esjberg FC on the final day of play, while Malibu and TWSS face off. However, while an Angel City win and Malibu loss would see the sides tied in points at nine, the home squad faces an impossible hurdle. With the two sides' head-to-head results being equal (1-4 L, 7-4 W), the next decider in points ties is overall GD ... and Malibu's +14 combined with Angel City's -8 (a difference of 22 goals) makes Angel City's move into the playoffs unlikely.

ACFC claimed playoff spot with two games left

With a stunning 5-1 win over FC Playa Vista, which included a saved PK from keeper Logan Redlin, ACFC have already secured a ACSL playoff spot in the EPL Division ... with two games still to play.

David Woirhaye led the charge with a hat trick, while James Green added a single. The game kicked off with an own goal by FC Playa Vista. The win, ACFC's fourth straight, sees the team (on 12 points) six points above second place AWOL Select, and nine points on top of the Swamp Donkeys and FC Playa Vista. One more win will see the squad take the EPL Div title ... two wins will secure the top playoff seed.

Angel City FC also improved their playoff chances in La Liga with a hard-fought 7-4 win over Malibu United. Both teams now have six points over four games, one point behind leaders TWSS and two points in front of Esjberg FC. So the title race and playoff spots in La Liga are all still up for grabs. James Green led the scoring in Saturday's match with a hat trick, with Russ Muratov, Brad Miller, Volkert Besseling and Angel Matos adding singles.

The Allstars were not so successful on the day, dropping an early 3-0 lead to Typhoon FC and losing their match 5-3. Goals were scored by Jonny Ibanez, Bjorn Jacoby and James Green, who now has a commanding 10-goal lead in the Angel City Golden Boot race.

The Allstars now find themselves in third place in Serie A, six points behind Del Rey City and five points behind Typhoon FC. They must win their last two matches against Real Talk and Del Rey City for a chance to make the playoffs. And Typhoon FC will have to drop points.

Angel City 7s post win, tie and a loss

Despite one unfortunate half of play over three matches, Angel City's three 7s squads recorded a loss, a tie and a convincing win during Week 3 of ACSL action at the Playa Vista sports complex May 14.

Angel City FC started the day slowly, falling behind 5-0 against Esjberg FC in La Liga play before coming to life in the second half, where Volkert Besseling recorded a brace. Final score 6-2, with Angel City taking the second half, 2-1. Angel City now sit in fourth in their division with a win and two losses, one point behind Esjberg FC and TWSS and three points behind mid-season leaders Malibu United.

The Allstars improved the day earning a hard-fought 2-2 tie against Serie A rivals and current leaders Del Rey City, with Matt Onheiber also taking a brace. The Allstars sit in third spot in their division with a win, a loss and a tie, two points behind Typhoon FC and three points behind Del Rey City.

And then ACFC hit the field running in EPL action, knocking off the Swamp Donkeys 8-2 on the goal-scoring strength of Craig Blois, who netted five. James Greene added a brace with Rahoul Ghose recording the final tally. ACFC tops their division and the league with three wins and nine points, six ahead of the Swamp Donkeys and FC Playa Vista.

ACFC Municipal Team Drops 4-2 to League Leaders

A short-staffed ACFC Municipal Team fought hard resulting in a 4-2 loss to league leaders SC United on Thursday May 12.

James Green and Jay Baker scored for the Blues but it was not enough to overcome the 4-0 lead the opposition achieved to start the game.

An exceptionally strong effort was put in by goalkeeper Dave Styles. Styles made several saves in the second half to keep the home side within striking distance.

Ian Worrell also was solid while playing the “Stopper” position for the first time in league play.

A thank you must go out to all reserve players who made an effort to come on out on short notice to fill in for players out with injuries or other commitments.

A special thanks goes out to Ben Kull for organizing the reserve players and bringing extra socks. Reminder to all Municipal Players – You MUST have black socks AND black shorts to play. There are no exceptions to this rule. Several players were denied entry to the game due to lacking the correct wardrobe.

As a side note – the award for most colorful ACFC’er goes to Luis Deveze for his attire of Black Shorts, Green Socks, White Boots, Pink Laces and of course his ACFC Jersey.

The Municipal Team returns to play next week at the John Ferraro Fields at 8:50 against Glendale United.

Angel City takes trio of ACSL wins

Angel City took things up a notch in week two of ACSL Spring League play Saturday at Playa Vista with a trio of wins over AWOL Select, TWSS and Real Talk.

Backed by some superlative saves from keeper Juan Ortiz -- who played between the uprights for all three matches -- the Allstars started things off with a 6-4 win over Real Talk, boosting the squad into a tie for second place in Serie A with Typhoon FC ... three points behind Del Rey City.

ACFC continued the run with a 6-3 win over AWOL Select, leaving them at the top of the EPL, three points up on the Swamp Donkeys and FC Playa Vista.

And Angel City FC rounded out the day's results with a hard-fought 5-4 victory over TWSS, leaving them solidly in second place in La Liga, three points behind Malibu United.

AC Cuties blank Cosmos 12-0

Angel City returned to Southbay Sports League action today, dominating the Cosmos from the opening whistle. Manager Miguel Lopez was pleased to see his team playing a patient, passing game, even as the Cosmos' frustration turned physical.

AC's defense continued its fine run of form, led by Goalie Logan Redlin who capped off his 3rd shut-out of the season by joining in the attack and scoring the team's 12th goal of the day from the penalty spot.

Angel City sits in first place with a record of 5-0, midway through the regular season. They play Sporting Boyacan next Saturday at 7:30pm at Aviation Park.

L  A  P  L

Angel City ended their first full season in the LA Premier League Thursday night with a tough first Cup Round loss to Pacific Athletic FC 1-1 (4-3 on PKs).

ACFC, which finished the regular season in 10th place with a record of seven wins, 13 losses, two ties, came out hard against PAFC and created several goal opportunities, including two dipping shots which were tipped over the crossbar by PAFC keeper Alex Collins. The score stayed 0-0 until midway through the second half when ACFC gave up a penalty with a takedown in the box. Down 1-0 ACFC fought back and tied the game with minutes remaining off a corner kick.

However, the squad went down 4-3 in the Penalty Kick Round, with two of the five shooters being stopped by the PAFC keeper. ACFC keeper Pete Marlenga also managed to save one of the five PKs.

PAFC now moves forward to the second round Monday against the Coyotes at Crossroads. Other second round match-ups include:

Valhalla vs Penmar (April 1)
Celtic FC vs FK Dinamo (April 2)
Avanti vs Cloverfield (April 2)

The Angel City over-30s returned to Muni League action Thursday night -- following a year's absence from the league -- with a convincing 6-0 win over newcomers Larchmont United FC at Griffith Park.

The squad, which will now likely include some of the LAPL over-30s players, next faces off against SC United at John Ferraro, April 7 with an 8:50 PM kickoff.

Cuties take fourth straight win; Over-30s Updates

S O U T H B A Y    S P O R T S     L E A G U E

Playing in the SouthBay Sports League, the Angel City Cuties racked up their fourth straight convincing win March 26 ... but at a cost.

While Angel City toppled the Wolves 7-1 in an often rough and physical game, the squad lost co-manager/player Dave Wardell to injury, quite likely for the rest of the season.

"He got hurt chasing down a guy during the game," player/coach Miguel Lopez said following the match. "He collided with (ACFC keeper) Logan (Redlin) and fell awkwardly on his shoulder."

Lopez added Wardell has been diagnosed with a broken clavicle, which will see him in recovery for several months.

"I spoke to him last night and he's in good spirits. He'll be out for a bit though."

Angel City FC wishes Wardell a speedy recovery.

The Cuties face defending champs Cosmos next week at Aviation Park with a 1:30 PM kickoff.

L  A  P  L

Angel City, who finished 10th in the 12-team LA Premier League during regular season play, will face off against seventh-place Pacific Athletic FC in the first round of Cup play, Thursday night at Crossroads with an 8 PM kickoff. The winner will advance to the second round to face Coyotes FC April 4 (8 PM @ Crossroads)

L A    M U N I C I P A L    L E A G U E

Angel City returns to Municipal Over-30s League play for the first time in a year to face Larchmont United FC, Thursday, March 31 at Griffith Park (7 PM kickoff).

The squad, featuring a bevy of new signings as well as some veterans who will split their time between the Muni and LAPL, play Thursdays in the red division, sharing the tables with the likes of Glendale United, Gypsy FC, SC United and the Hot Spurs ... as well as Larchmont.

ACFC will play a 12-game season meeting all opposition for at least two matches (two squads will be played three times). The top four in the red and blue divisions will then advance to the Cup round. The blue division includes Dinamo Spartak, Atletico Español, Slamdance F.C., The Devils, Burbank Red Machine and FCLA 30+.

ACFC takes 7s title in style

S M A S L

ACFC captured the Setanta Division in style, ending the SMASL Spring Season with eight wins and two losses after a 5-3 win over Westside Proper.

The squad had already sealed the Cup win last week, but battled back from an early Westside goal with Brandon Cole earning a hat trick and Michael Sharp and Marc Salomon adding singles.

Things did not go as well for the AC Allstars later that day despite a valiant effort against That's What She Said, a team the Allstars had beaten 3-1 earlier in the season.

Needing a win for a chance at the Santiago title (with three teams tied for first and a fourth one point off the lead going into the final week), the Allstars dropped two unfortunate goals on defensive errors early in the game and found themselves on their heels. Russ Muratov got one back with a header off a perfect cross from David Woirhaye, and added a second to tie the game. But the home side conceded a third on the counterattack while battling for the necessary winner and ran out of time.

If the Allstars had won, they also need Busbys SC to tie or lose their match against Coffee Bean ... Coffee Bean did win, 4-3, making the loss to TWSS -- the eventual title winners -- harder to take. The Allstars finished tied for third with Busbys with an identical record of five wins, three losses and two ties.

As to the ACFC Golden boot ... that went to James Green, despite his absence on the final day of the season. Green recorded 32 goals, while Brandon "the first half sensation" Cole rallied for 19 on the season, followed by Ivan Reyes with 11.

Final Goal Standings

ACFC 7s take Setanta title (revised Mar. 23)

L A P L

ACFC lost a tight 3-2 decision to FK Dinamo Monday night at Crossroads leaving the squad in 10th place after regular season play with a record of 7 wins, 13 losses and 2 ties.

ACFC will face seventh-place PAFC in the Cup Tourney's First Round Thursday, March 31 at Crossroads with an 8 PM kickoff. The winner will then play the Coyotes -- who received a bye into Round 2 -- Monday, April 4 at Crossroads (8 PM kickoff).

S M A S L

With just one week left in the winter/spring season, the ACFC 7s captured the SMASL Sentanta Division title Saturday with a scorching 13-1 win over Del Rey City Admiralty.

Del Rey, who must have felt somewhat like Napoleon at the battle of Waterloo, found themselves quickly down 2-0 after just five minutes, and 9-0 at the half.

The second half was fairly quiet on the scoring front for the first few minutes, before ACFC resumed its bombardment with an additional four strikes before Del Rey earned its lone tally in the final minute.

Brandon Cooke led the charge with four goals, followed by James Green, Russ Muratov and Ivan with braces, and Andreas, Angel and Rahoul Ghose with singles.

ACFC sits on top the Setanta Division with 21 points (76 goals for, 35 against), two points up on nearest rivals multiple scorgasms on 18 points, and AWOL Select with 15.  With a win counting for three points in the league, the best the scorgasms can hope for is a tie on points if ACFC lose their last match against Westside Proper FC.  The scorgasms play Del Rey in their finale. However, ties are first contested on head-to-head results and head-to-head goal differential.

SMASL TIE-BREAKING METHODOLOGY

1) Head to Head competition in common games during the season with the tied team, greater points total wins.

2) Goals For minus Goals Against in Head to Head Competition with the tied team, the team with the greater differential wins.

The scorgasms took their first matchup against ACFC 7-5, Jan. 22.  But ACFC struck back with a vengeance Feb. 26, winning 9-2, tipping the GD race in ACFC's favor 14-9.  Of course a win in ACFC's finale would make them clear winners anyways. Congrats to the team for taking the Cup for a second successive season.

For the AC Allstars, who play in the Santiago Division, the waters are much more muddied right now. With one game to play in the season three teams are tied for the lead on points at 17: the Allstars, That's What She Said and Busbys SC. Coffee Bean is one point off the top at 16 points, while the final two teams -- LA Lekers and Tangled Roots -- are out of contention with five and three points a piece.

Despite having to play a man down due to a red card infraction this week, the Allstars managed to tie Coffee Bean 2-2, with James Green recording the brace.

This coming Saturday sees the following match-ups:

AC Allstars vs That's What She Said
LA Lekers vs Tangled Roots
Busbys SC vs Coffee Bean

For the Allstars to have any hope of also repeating as Cup winners, they must beat TWSS.  Then the only way for that reality to occur is for Coffee Bean to beat or tie Busbys.  This would give the Allstars 20 points, Busbys SC 18 and Coffee Bean 17 (tie scenerio) or Coffee Bean 19 and Busbys 17 (win scenerio) ... and TWSS 17 points. If Busbys win, then even though the Allstars would be tied on points, they would lose on head-to-head goal differential.  Here's hoping for the right alignment in the stars.

S O U T H   B A Y  S P O R T S  L E A G U E

The ACFC Cuties had a quiet one this week with Goats SC defaulting. The squad now had three straight wins to top the division. The Cuties play the Wolves next week at Aviation Park with a 5:30 PM kickoff.

Cuties and 7s rack up more wins

S O U T H   B A Y  R E C R E A T I O N   L E A G U E

Playing only their second game in the South Bay Recreation League Men's Open 11s, the Angel City Cuties met a more formidable opponent Saturday in their match-up with the Playa Rovers ... but still came out on top.

"We won 2-0 in a very tough and physical game," player/coach Miguel Lopez said.  "There were seven yellow cards distributed among both teams and a lot of hard fouls."

Lopez added the referee missed two calls that could have been penalties in Angel City's favor.

"One was a deliberate take down of one of our boys inside the box and a second was a hand ball inside the box by one of their guys that even the line judge signaled. In any case it's good to be able to get the win under these conditions."

The Cuties, who boast six points over two games and a Goal Differential of +7, next face Goats SC this coming Saturday at Aviation Park with a 3:30 PM kickoff.

S M A S L

In SMASL action this past weekend both squads posted impressive wins with ACFC knocking off a resilient Real Talk 9-5 despite missing some starters who had an LAPL 11s match scheduled at the same time.  Brandon Cole led the squad with a hat trick, followed by James Green with a brace, and singles from DK, Ivan, Marc and Angel.

The win -- combined with AWOL Selects loss to Del Rey City -- leaves ACFC alone atop the Setanta Division, leading by two points with just two matches remaining. ACFC faces Del Rey City this coming week and Westside Prop FC in the season finale.

The AC Allstars -- also facing a must win situation to stay in Santiago Division cup contention -- faced top-place Busby's FC whom the team had dropped a close 4-2 loss to earlier in the season.  The Allstars started on a positive note with an early goal from outside the box, struck past the keeper by Rahoul Ghose, but then saw themselves drop two before the half.  James Green combined for a second half brace to put the Allstars back in the lead, with Matt Onheiber adding a late insurance goal.  Good insurance it was, as Busby's slammed home a winner just before the final whistle ... leaving the Allstars with a narrow 4-3 win.

The Allstars face coffee bean this coming Saturday, tied for first with the squad on 11 points.  coffee bean handed the Allstars their only other loss this season ... a close 5-4 decision.  Adding to the mix are That's What She Said (the Allstars final match-up of the season) and Busby's SC, who both have 10 points.  It's going to be a nail-biter ... but two wins for the Allstars will hand them the cup.

L A P L

Saturday's only downturn came in the LAPL with Angel City playing its third consecutive Saturday match in a row ... highly inconvenient when the club plays in two other Saturday leagues.  The over 30s 11s side dropped a close 4-3 match to Matador FC, leaving them in eighth place (7 wins, 12 losses, 2 ties) with only one regular season game remaining. They will face FK Dinamo Monday, March 21 at Crossroads with an 8 PM kickoff.   Then the team will be entered in a single knockout playoff round.

L A   M U N I C I P A L  L E A G U E

And finally the full schedule for the Angel City 30s Muni League team will be released this coming Friday. The squad's first Thursday night match will be played  March 31. Stay tuned for more details.

Best Day in Angel City History!

This past Saturday did not just mark the premier of Angel City's new team, "The Cuties." It wasn't the first time the Premier League team beat Cloverfield FC. It was not the first time both 7s teams won. It was not just the birthday of Manager/Blog Writer Ben Kull. It was all these things. But it was also the first time in club history that four ACFC teams won games in the same day.

Angel City Cuties

The newest ACFC team made its presence known by defeating "No Goals 4 U" in its first Southbay League game. It took a half for the team to settle in before running away with a second half four goal shutout. The final score was 6-1 in favor of the Cuties, suggesting a name change for the defeated team.

Next week sees the team face defending champs Playa Rovers at 5:30pm at Aviation Park in Manhattan Beach.

Angel City Premier

Our 30+ Premier League team took revenge on mid-table rivals Cloverfield FC this Saturday at Palisades High School.

Following an early season loss the Cloverfield and facing a plague of injuries, Coach Tom Bry called in a number of reserves, asking his players to step up and fight to salvage their season. And the team fulfilled its promise, winning 2-0 and moving up to 7th place in the table, poised for a top half finish.

The win was a team effort, as ACFC controlled possession and protected a 1-0 lead until Greg Metzger scored on the final kick of the game to ice the victory. Standout play from recent call-up Andres Rodriguez on defense and two assists from the recently returning Freddie DeLeon highlighted the win. Pete Marlenga in goal led his defense to the third shutout of the season.

City faces Matador FC this Saturday at 2 pm at West LA College.

AC All-Stars 7s

The All-Stars won another nail-biter this Saturday, defeating Tangled Roots 5-4, to move to 2nd place in the Santiago Division of the Santa Monica Adult Soccer League.

The game saw the return of recently engaged Matty Onheiber, who scored two goals and ran the midfield from whistle to whistle. Loanee Ian Worell added two more from the midfield, while Mike Gemballa continued a fine run of form with a header goal from a Kirby Adams assist.

An under-the-weather Jonny Ibanez played to the point of collapse, making the game winning assist on his final touch of the game. Angel Matos, Bryan Moore, JP Meyer and Goalie Ian Benyo played their hearts out as the team gained valuable points on the rest of the league.

Next week the team faces Busby's FC for sole possession of first place. Game is at 2:30 pm at Santa Monica Airport.

ACFC 7s

The red hot ACFC 7s won their fifth straight by defeating first place AWOL Select. With a seven goal first leg defeat to avenge, ACFC attacked for 50 minutes, scoring nine goals to AWOL's four.

James Green extended his Golden Boot lead by scoring four goals, while Brandon Cole continued his run of form with two more goals. Ivan and Russ added tallies as the team flexed its muscles against the best the league had to offer.

Now tied for first on points, ACFC seems ready to win the final three games of the season, hoping for a stumble from AWOL.

Next game is this Saturday at 12:30 pm at Santa Monica Airport against bottom dwellers Real Talk.

My Birthday

Thanks to everyone who wished me well and joined me for victory drinks at Spitfire Grill. Shots, ice cream, cookies, friends and four wins.

I couldn't ask for a better day.

Angel City News Update

Greetings Angel City blog readers. Sorry it's been so quiet here. Our regular poster, Rahoul, has been busy, actually working for a living. So for now, your fearless and perpetually injured manager, Ben Kull will be giving you the update.

LA Premier League

After an encouraging first half to the season that saw the team briefly enter the elite top three, our over-30 geezers have come crashing back down to the bottom half of the table like a grizzled old bag in an 80s era medic alert commercial. With only two wins since October 16, the team is facing an injury epidemic and a big moment of truth. An upcoming series of winnable games vs mid to lower tier rivals has coach Tom Bry calling on his players to dig deep, "trust each other and fight for each other for 90 minutes."

As an added obstacle, this week brings the departure of veteran defender, Leo Wallach. It's been an honor and a privilege to play with Leo and we wish him the best of luck up North. On the positive side, Ben O'Meara sits in sixth place in the league in goals scored (10) and total points (24). Dave Woirhaye is 14th in the league in total points (18). Coach Bry has started calling up Andres, Ivan and Li'l Marius to the past few games to prepare for Leo's absence. And we're still performing better than most new Premier League teams, only five points away from the top half of the table. There's plenty of time to turn things around.

Santa Monica 7s - Santiago Division

The AC All-Stars has become known for stingy defense and a scrappy offense. The average goal difference this season has been only two goals per game. In a small field league with full sized goals, this is a remarkable statistic. This All-Stars team has never had an easy win, has lost two heart breakers and walked away with a tie in last Saturday's battle of wills with the LA Lekers. Sammy X leads the scoring, with nearly every member of the team adding goals this season. The season high came two weeks ago with the dethroning of league leaders That's What She Said. With a clogged up Santiago Division table, the All-Stars are only two points out of first place. Bottom dwellers Tangled Roots are on the schedule this week. A win is crucial as the All-Stars need to go undefeated down the stretch in their bid for a second league title.

Santa Monica 7s - Setanta Division

The ACFC 7s team has been lighting their league on fire, notching four straight wins while outscoring their opponents 38 - 10 during the winning streak. English import James Green leads the scoring with 16 goals in 6 games. But it's been a team effort with goals and assists coming from every member of the team and help from All-Stars loanees, Logan, Sammy, DK, Luis and Rahoul. The team's biggest win of the season came last weekend with a 9-2 drubbing of the young upstarts from Multiple Scorgasms, who were barely able to score multiple times, without a single orgasm (we hope).

This week brings on the league leading AWOL Select, fresh off their first loss of the season. A win this Saturday is vital for ACFC's chances for a third consecutive Santa Monica League title.

Southbay Sports League

This Saturday marks the debut of Angel City's all-ages 11 v 11 team. Nicknamed "the Cuties" by Managers Miguel Lopez and Dave Wardell, the team is poised to make a run for the Southbay Title. The team includes many top level players from college, club and semi-pro ranks and has played a solid pre-season, holding their own against an excellent Sunset FC team and beating a patchwork Del Rey City squad 7-0.

LA Municipal League

After a season off, Angel City is re-entering the LA Municipal League 30+ division, where the club won its first championship. With some veteran players from the original squad mixed with a collection of new internationals, the team will be going up against the top teams from last season's Municipal League, playing on Thursday nights in Griffith Park.

SMASL kicks off

Angel City kicked off the Spring 7s SMASL season with a win and a tough loss, Saturday at the Santa Monica Airport fields.

The AC Allstars got back to its winning ways in the first match of the day, capping a weaker LA Lekers side 3-1 off strikes from Luis Deveze, Peter Marlenga and Sam Xaylitdet.

ACFC faced a tougher "multiple scorgasms" side and fell down 2-0 early on the match off of two strong header. The squad fought back though, at one point tying the match 4-4 in the second half. But defensive errors cost dearly in the final 10 minutes, leaving the side down 7-5 at the final whistle. Goals were netted by Sam Xaylitdet (2), David Worihaye and James Green, with the scorgasms adding an own goal to the mix.

Next week the AC Allstars take on Tangled Roots on the West field at 9:30 am, while ACFC meets AWOL Select at 1:30 PM on the East field.

SMASL 7s resumes January 22

Angel City FC will be fielding two squads for upcoming 7 v 7 action in the Santa Monica Adult Soccer League, which resumes play Jan. 22.

Rosters for ACFC and the AC Allstars will be announced soon. ACFC plays the LA Lekers Jan. 22 at 9:30 AM, followed by the AC Allstars matchup against multiple scorgasms at 10:30 AM. ACFC topped the Setanta Division last season while the Allstars took a close second in the Santiago Division.

Scheduled games can be found on the ACFC Fixtures page, which is updated as the league announces new game blocks.
